New details are emerging about Twitters new music offering: company officials confirm the service will include only the chorus of songs, calling it an innovative microlistening platform.
At Twitter, we believe you only need 140 characters to convey your thoughts, said CEO Dick Costolo. So it stands to reason that you only need 20 seconds to sing your song.
Seriously, do I have to listen to your chorus three times to enjoy your song? Costolo added. Youre popping tags, I get it. Lets move on.
Twitters approach to music is expected to completely change an industry that has been fixated on three-minute songs for decades, an approach Costolo calls as outdated as Britney Spears thinking shes still relevant. He pointed out that 20 seconds is about how long Spears actually appears in her recent hit with Will I Am.
Will Twitter make Britney a star again? said chairman Jack Dorsey. No, were a social media platform, not a time machine. Shell always have 1999.
Given the simplicity of being able to produce a song for Twitter, Dorsey said they expect that artists will churn out one or two new songs per week, called twunes. While it seems like a high level of output, Dorsey noted that the twunes dont have to be profound.
Twitter users are perfectly content with topics like what you had for breakfast or how much you love sleeping in on a Saturday morning, Dorsey said. And then once people get done retweeting their favorites songs, itll be just like pop radio or that viral meme you cant stand anymore.
Our goal is inundation, saturation, exasperation, he added. Its pop music nirvana.
Other features of Twitters new music service include a unique #piracy hashtag for unauthorized twunes and special spam-reducing headphones to eliminate unwanted twunes from a users stream.
